PURE: Cancer Overtakes CVD as Leading Cause of Death in Wealthy Nations

Cancer is currently the leading cause of death in high-income countries. It accounts for 2.5 times more deaths than cardiovascular diseases (1.7 and 0.6 deaths per 1000 person-years, respectively). However, worldwide, cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death. These results are based on the PURE prospective study, which included 162 534 people aged 35 to 70 years, living in 21 countries. The follow-up period was 9.5 years.

The results of the PURE study were published on September 3 in the Lancet and presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress 2019 in Paris.
