The aim of this study was to show that patients aged 75 years and older who did not have atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease at the time of study initiation, receiving statins, have a lower risk of death.
This retrospective cohort study enrolled 326,981 participants. It was shown that persons receiving statins had a significantly lower risk of general and cardiovascular death in comparison with the control group (risk coefficients 0.75 and 0.80, respectively).
The authors concluded that statin use was associated with a significantly lower risk of all-cause death and cardiovascular disease among older people in the United States over 75 years. Further studies, including randomized clinical trials, are needed to better define the role of statin therapy in the elderly.
