Higher consumption of green leafy vegetables was inversely related to the incidence of stroke

Meta-analysis results from cohort studies showed that higher consumption of green leafy vegetables (GLV) was inversely related to the incidence of CVD events (0.93; 95% CI: 0.92–0.95; P < 0.00001). Similarly, pooled results from six cohort studies also suggested higher consumption of GLV was inversely related to the incidence of stroke (RR: 0.93; 95% CI: 0.90–0.97; P = 0.0003). Notably, one large case–control study showed dose–response protective effect against stroke of daily consumption of GLV (OR: 0.27; 95% CI: 0.19–0.38) than weekly consumption (OR: 0.70; 95% CI: 0.52–0.95) compared to no consumption.

Although the exact mechanism of the protective effect is not well understood, some components of GLV may promote haemostasis (Vitamin K content), neuronal transmission (calcium content), antioxidant activity (vitamins C and E content), and vasodilatory effects (nitrates content).
